Alaska Photos Page 2, Talkeetna

Talkeetna is a tiny village where an adventurous group of hearty souls live. Population 772. Talkeetna is located at the confluence of three rivers, the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna. Flightseeing, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting make up a large portion of the local economy. Talkeetna is a 2.5 hour drive from Anchorage. The downtown area is classified as a National Historic site, with many of the buildings dating from the early 1900s - including Nagley's General Store, Fairview Inn and The Roadhouse.

We ate lunch at the Roadhouse. Jodie and I tried the pasties (a meat and vegetable pie) and the homemade chocolate cake. Tom had homemade blackberry pie. It was all utterly fantastic. While we were there, a young woman came in and bought a shower for $3. Many of the homes in the area have no running water and the residents come to the Roadhouse and use one of its showers.
